Prostate cancer
Around 10,000 men in the UK die each year from prostate
cancer. That is the same
number as women who die from breast cancer, and yet the
disease does not receive
such a high profile.
Women are bombarded by information about
breast cancer, ensuring they are fully aware of what symptoms to
look out for. Against this, most men are ignorant of the signs
of prostate cancer, and ready information about the disease is
limited.
This is one reason why The London Clinic and
leading consultants in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate
cancer have joined forces to offer a comprehensive range of
services to men including brachytherapy and robotic
surgery. It aims to provide men with information explaining
the nature and risks of the disease, to describe the different
treatment options available to contain or cure the cancer, and to
facilitate treatment by some of the UK’s leading urologists in the
field.
By logging onto www.prostatecancercentre.com,
men can discover the type of symptoms that can indicate
prostate cancer. These may include weak or interrupted stream
of urine that requires straining to produce and, on completion, a
man may feel that the bladder is still not empty. Blood in the
semen may also be a sign of prostate cancer.
While these symptoms are most commonly found
in benign enlargements of the gland and are not specific to
prostate cancer, any man experiencing them needs to be checked by
his GP.
Kidney stones
The London Clinic has a long tradition of offering a clinical
service to those patients with upper urinary tract stone disease.
In the late 1980s we invested in a state-of-the-art lithotripter.
Now we have a Storz lithotripter which is used to treat
patients with acute ureteric stones or those with smaller renal
stones. The latest instruments and technology required for the
endoscopic treatment of stones is available through our fully
integrated Minimally Invasive Treatment Unit (MITU).
Rigid and flexible scopes and dedicated stone lasers for
disintegrating larger stones are available to the specialised team
of doctors and nurses that have been developed over many years. We
are an internationally recognised centre for percutaneous renal
stone surgery.
Uroradiological imaging is provided by dedicated
uroradiologists. Nephrologists offer metabolic advice on the basis
of the sophisticated biochemical screening that is available
through The London Clinic Pathology Laboratory.
