Mole mapping service
Our mole mapping service is an outpatient service that
is headed up by Mrs Dalia Nield FRCS(Ed), and is available for
patients to undergo mole mapping.
Our
service
If a mole looks different, either gets larger,
thicker, bleeds, itches or changes colour and shape, it should be
checked by a doctor. If further investigation is needed,
referral for mole mapping would be appropriate.
The procedure consists of photographing all
moles (mapping) from head to toe to produce a record for the use of
the consultant, and for the patient to assess changes in their
moles.
The patient keeps the folder and returns
annually for check-ups. If during the course of the year they
notice any major changes they can compare the changes and visit the
consultant immediately. If the patient moves to a different
city or country, they can take their record to a local
consultant.
Diagnosis
Some moles will require closer investigation. For this a
hand-held 'Dermogenius' is used, which magnifies a photograph
of a mole 10 to 14 times. A computer program analyses
the characteristics of the mole, giving an index DSDP (Digital
Standardised Dermatoscopic Point score), and helps the consultant
identify malignant melanomas at an early, curable stage. It
also avoids unnecessary surgery in pigmented skin
lesions.
