Patient pathway
The London Clinic Bariatric Service boasts a
multi-disciplinary team including bariatric surgeons,
anaesthetists, dietitians, respiratory physicians,
gastroenterologists, endocrinologists and diabetologists – all
participate in the team as needed. In addition we work with a
psychologist who specialises in eating disorders. Following
successful weight loss patients may require help with body image
issues, including plastic surgery. The London Clinic can
offer help through its specialist consultants who are experienced
in this area.
NICE Guidelines
The National Institute of Clinical Excellence
(NICE) has issued recommendations to healthcare providers on the
use of surgery for bariatric services. The London Clinic is
committed to adhering to these guidelines.
Health assessment
A thorough assessment is carried out to
identify any underlying health problems and
potential risks.
The purpose of the initial consultation is to
determine if you are a suitable candidate for bariatric surgery.
Even if you meet the minimum weight requirements, we must consider
other factors before surgery is offered. The initial
consultation includes a physical examination, history and
evaluation. Depending on patient age and medical condition, certain
blood tests, an ECG, and X-rays may be carried out. The surgeon may
request additional consultations
from other specialists before making a final
recommendation.
All bariatric surgery carries a risk of
complications. Your surgeon will explain these in detail to you and
assess the risks that are relevant to your individual
case.
