Critical Care Unit and Outreach service

The Critical Care Unit at The London Clinic is a fully accredited facility which manages all types of seriously ill patients, from those who require overnight care following surgery through to the treatment and management of patients with multiple organ failure.

All modalities of organ support are available on site, comparable to the facilities available at nearby teaching hospitals. New treatments, techniques and facilities are constantly evaluated.

The London Clinic provides on-site Critical Care Fellows whose roles are to provide immediate care for critically ill patients. The Unit is lead by the Clinical Director, Dr John Goldstone, and a team of consultants are available day and night to ensure the highest standard of care.

Critical Care at the Clinic is very active, with over 1000 cases admitted each year. Our activity is fully audited through the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre, and our results and outcomes following critical illness are comparable to the best NHS centres.

The Critical Care Unit has also been improving the care of ward patients. We provide an “early warning” system of deteriorating health to ward patients through a system termed Outreach. When ward nurses record observations like blood pressure and heart rate, a score is measured to identify patients who are ill or who have changing observations. The Critical Care team is then alerted, which enables patients to be seen, reviewed and treated quickly by the Critical Care team on the ward in the event of an urgent problem, supplementing the patients own medical team in an emergency.

Critical Care also provides assessment for patients prior to surgery, to quantify the level of risk involved and to individually plan for the admission of high risk patients. The outcome after surgery can be dramatically altered by applying Critical Care techniques designed to maintain heart and lung function to patients prior to surgery. This initiative has been pioneered at The London Clinic.
